Non-league day brought excitement after a tough few years for football as Mickleover Sports welcomed non-league giants FC United of Manchester to the Don Amott Arena in front of a season-high of 802 fans.

With non-league football being hit hardest during the covid years, Sports chairman Don Amott said it was the ‘perfect day.

Amott said: “It was a brilliant day had by all.

“The weather was perfect which helped, and we got lucky in the fact that neither our bigger local clubs Derby County nor Burton Albion was playing that day.”

The Derbyshire club has always been helped by their local football league clubs and fans due to the affiliation Amott has. Being once on the board of Derby County and Burton Albion, Don feels the close connection helps his club.

Don Amott added: “The connection between our local football league clubs and us is a massive help.

“Their fans understand the importance of non-league football and will use every opportunity to get down and support us.”

The fans were treated to a six-goal thriller that saw sports take the lead three times in. It was a vital point against a tough opposition for Mickleover who will keep pushing in their bid to stay up.

With this being the first of 2 international windows for English clubs, chairman Amott hopes fans will return to support Mickleover’s survival push, but also next season as he feels the importance of these opportunities.

Mickleover’s chairman said: “I hope the good people that game at the weekend will see how good the standard is at this level and will return for future matches.

“(On non-league days and international breaks) They are so important to not just us but all non-league clubs across the country, especially after not playing full season for almost 2 years, some non-league clubs almost went down because of the pandemic, support from other fans is a vital source of income when we are surrounded be established EFL clubs.”

“I would like to thank all fans from both clubs that turned up on Saturday, it was a great day had by all.”
